Few schooling fish rival the Cardinal Tetra for sheer color: a neon blue stripe runs the length of the body above a deep red band that continues from head to tail. This South American native is a peaceful, easy-mixing schooler that suits nearly any community aquarium.
In the wild, Cardinal Tetras inhabit slow-moving rivers with soft, slightly acidic water and dense vegetation, and they do best in home aquariums that mirror those conditions. Kept in groups of six or more, they settle into a tight, synchronized swimming pattern that brings steady motion and color to a planted tank.
They're forgiving enough for a first-time fishkeeper yet colorful enough to hold the interest of a seasoned aquarist, which keeps them a dependable choice for community setups.
