Cherry Barbs are among the more peaceful barb species, which makes them a good fit for planted community tanks that other barbs might disrupt. Males in breeding condition turn a deep cherry red that shows up well against green plants.
Unlike many of their relatives, Cherry Barbs are gentle enough to keep alongside small tankmates, including shrimp. They're hardy, easy to care for, and do best in groups of six or more.
