Rotala Macrandra Red — not to be confused with the standard green form. The red variety is prized for its intense magenta-pink and deep red coloration, distinct from the softer green tones of regular Rotala Macrandra.
This is a more demanding red stem plant than most, but a rewarding one for growers willing to put in the work. Its dense, bushy clusters of small, narrow leaves show deep red and hot magenta-pink color, giving it a fiery, jewel-like look in the right conditions.
Native to India, Rotala Macrandra Red asks more of the keeper than most plants on this list. It needs high light and benefits significantly from CO2 injection and a nutrient-rich substrate — with that setup, it produces some of the most intense red and magenta coloration available in any aquatic plant. New growth comes in as bright pink, while older lower leaves deepen to a rich brownish-red, creating a natural color gradient along the stem.
Used as a background statement or a midground accent, Rotala Macrandra Red brings color intensity and texture that few other stem plants can match.
