A sponge filter is a common choice for shrimp tanks, nano aquariums, breeding setups, and fry-rearing tanks, where gentle filtration matters more than raw flow. Unlike power filters, there's no intake that can trap or injure shrimp, fry, or other small, delicate livestock.
Run off a simple air pump and airline tubing (both sold separately), the sponge's large surface area supports a strong colony of beneficial bacteria for biological filtration. Maintenance is minimal — rinse the sponge in old tank water every 4–6 weeks — and the low running cost and reliability make it a common pick among shrimp keepers and breeders.

Notes
Needs an established bacterial colony to be effective — expect several weeks of cycling before it provides full biological filtration. Never rinse it in tap water or replace it outright; rinse gently in old tank water only, so you don't wipe out the bacteria.
