Unzan Stone, also sold as Manten Stone, comes out of the Nature Aquarium tradition popularized by Takashi Amano and the ADA aquascaping school. Its rough, jagged surface — with sharp peaks, valleys, and a deep gray-brown color carrying subtle reddish mineral streaks — gives it a convincingly geological look.
It's frequently used to build imposing mountain and island scapes, and in Iwagumi layouts it often serves as the dominant rock around which the rest of the composition is arranged. Unzan Stone is inert, so it won't affect water chemistry, and its naturally porous surface gives mosses and ferns a solid place to attach.
